Mamadou Fall: From Montverde and LAFC to Europe — and Back to MLS

Mamadou Ibra Mbacke Fall — usually styled Mamadou Fall or Mamadou Mbacke — is a Senegalese center back whose career already reads like a modern pathway case study: Florida prep soccer, an early MLS breakthrough, loans into Spain’s top clubs, a permanent move to Barcelona’s structure, and a 2026 return to Major League Soccer with St. Louis CITY SC.

Montverde to LAFC at 18

Fall was born in Rufisque, Senegal (November 21, 2002) and developed in the United States at Montverde Academy in Florida before signing professionally with Los Angeles FC in June 2021, per LAFC’s later transfer release.

St. Louis CITY’s signing announcement says he made his MLS debut at 18 under Bob Bradley and went on to score six goals in 42 appearances across all competitions for LAFC. The same CITY release places 35 of those appearances in MLS. Separately, when LAFC announced his permanent move to Barcelona in July 2024, the club/league release cited 5 goals and 1 assist in 36 MLS regular-season games, plus 11 goals and 2 assists in 101 professional appearances to that point — regular-season and all-competitions samples that sit alongside each other rather than contradict each other.

Spain: Villarreal loan, La Liga debut

St. Louis CITY’s release states Fall moved to Europe in 2022 on loan at Villarreal CF, splitting time between the first and second teams, and made his La Liga debut in January 2023 in a 1–0 win over Girona FC.

That loan answered a hard question: Can an MLS-developed center back handle Spanish tempo and tactical detail? Fall’s answer was yes enough to keep bigger doors opening.

Barcelona Atlètic, then permanent Barça move

FC Barcelona’s own transfer note says Fall joined the club on loan from LAFC in summer 2023, then completed a permanent transfer the following summer. While on loan at Barça’s reserves, LAFC’s July 2024 release said he featured in 22 matches. On January 29, 2026, St. Louis CITY SC announced a permanent signing from FC Barcelona. CITY signed Fall through June 30, 2028, with club options for the 2028–29 and 2029–30 seasons, pending medicals, P-1 visa, and ITC. The club’s headline framing also noted over 130 professional appearances entering the deal. Sporting Director Corey Wray highlighted ball comfort, reading of the game, and front-foot defending — the same traits that made Fall interesting in Los Angeles and Spain.
