According to rumors from Germany’s most prominent football journal, Augsburg’s Carlos Gruezo did not attend the club’s training camp this month of January and has not played for the club since November of last year. It is looking like the 27-year-old Ecuadorian could make a possible return to an MLS club. This rumor has been brought to light as the two preferred midfielders (Arne Maier and Niklas Dorsch) for Augsburg have returned from injury and are expected to be the starting duo in the midfield.
Gruezo spent the 2016-2019 seasons at FC Dallas where he had 114 appearances, scoring five goals while winning the Supporters’ Shield and US Open Cup in 2016 with the Texan club. Gruezo is a short defensive midfielder who chases down opponents who try to get the ball in the middle of the field. He is often compared to N’Golo Kante of Chelsea as his style of play is very similar.
Physically, he does everything he can to get the ball back, like tackling or using his impressive strength. Mentally, he uses his ability to read the game and make interceptions. At 5’6″ tall, he has a low center of gravity that helps him get out of trouble quickly. Gruezo seems to like taking the easy way out and giving the ball to more creative players around him, but he can also make a cross-field pass when needed.
