Mexican giants, Club America has announced the signing of 28-year-old Uruguayan striker Jonathan “Cabecita” Rodriguez from Saudi Arabian side Al-Nassr on a reported four-year deal.
Rodriguez is no stranger to the Mexican league as he has played for Mexican sides Santos Laguna from 2016-2018 and more recently Cruz Azul from 2019-2021. In fact, Rodriguez played a pivotal role in ending Cruz Azul’s 23-year trophy drought in the 2021 Guardianes tournament. Scoring 11 goals in 22 games while also scoring the decisive goal in the final’s second leg, which saw Cruz Azul be crowned champions of the league.

Despite struggles with Al-Nassr, Club America and their fans are hopeful that Rodriguez will be able to replicate his form as he has previously with Santos Laguna and Cruz Azul but could that stack more pressure on a player that isn’t at his highest confidence level right now?
Within the past few years, we have seen Club America bring in forwards like Henry Martin, Nicolas Castillo, Giovani Dos Santos, Roger Martinez, Jeremy Menez, etc. who have failed to live up to the high expectations that were asked by them when they joined the Mexican club. Will Rodriguez join the underwhelming list of players that America has brought in or will he return to his stellar form from his last stint in Mexico?
