Ilkay Gundogan signed a 4-year / £29,120,000 contract with Manchester City F.C. and may now find his way to FC Barcelona this summer through a free transfer.
Gündogan’s contract expires in June, and reports in Spain have claimed he has a pre-agreement with Barça. The La Liga leaders are interested in the former Borussia Dortmund player but are also focusing on dealing with their financial problems by cutting their wage bill.
“There’s no agreement yet with any club,” said Ilhan Gündogan, the player’s uncle and agent. “The focus of Ilkay in recent weeks was only on Manchester City and the birth of his son. Now he is in the final and crucial phase of the season and is completely focused on that. Where Ilkay plays next season is still open.”
“Barcelona deal done? My future is not yet decided — obviously, there are talks in the background. But I won’t go into details now. I have not signed anything yet,” Gundogan said (h/t Fabrizio Romano).
The midfielder expressed his happiness at Manchester City, where he is currently the team captain. “I’m happy to be here at Man City and to be the captain,” he added.
With almost 300 competitive appearances for Manchester City, Gundogan’s success at Etihad has been well-received. Even Pep Guardiola is keen on keeping the German around beyond the summer, but he will not stand in the way of the player if he wants to leave the club.
