According to a joint announcement made by both clubs on Wednesday, Atlanta United has successfully finalized the transfer of Greece forward Giorgos Giakoumakis from Scottish champions Celtic.
The 28-year-old will reportedly cost Atlanta a fee of roughly $5.2 million, and after signing a deal until the 2026 season, he will be one of Atlanta’s three designated players. The contract will run through the end of the 2026 season. There was some speculation that he will transfer to the Urawa Red Diamonds of the J-League in the past.

Giakoumakis is going to take the position of Josef Martinez, whose contract was terminated a month ago before he joined Inter Miami. The usage of Atlanta’s one permitted offseason buyout of a guaranteed contract freed up salary space and made room for a designated player on the team’s roster.
After Atlanta was eliminated from postseason competition for the second time in three years, Giakoumakis will now be tasked with the responsibility of leading the team to a return to the postseason.
