The rich continue to get richer as Manchester City has announced the signing of 26-year-old midfielder Kalvin Phillips from Leeds United for a fee of around £42 million euros.
Phillips only made 23 appearances during Leeds campaign last season, mostly due to injuries, but was a key player whenever he featured for The Whites on matchday. Furthermore, he was instrumental in England’s UEFA Euro 2020 squad that made it all the way to the final.
Manchester City bring in Phillips in hopes of him occupying the same role that Fernandinho held in the City team for so many years. Fernandinho departed the club this summer as he made his return to his native Brazil.
Phillips is primarily used as defensive midfielder but can also play as a central midfielder comfortably due to his sharp short passes, long-ball distribution, and also his ability to start attacks while still being able trackback. Phillips is also comfortable in playing is small spaces and is able to make string passess that build up attacks. His play style has earned him the nickname “The Yorkshire Pirlo” due to their similar playing styles.
Phillips will dawn the number 4 jersey at City, with a move that was an inevitable and a long time coming, will Phillps live up to the expectations amongst the elite of the world?
