Romelu Lukaku Inter Milan Transfer

The Romelu Lukaku and Chelsea saga has finally come to and end today as it has been confirmed by Chelsea that the 29 year-old Belgian striker is set to join his ex club, Inter Milan on a season long-loan for the 22/23 Serie A season.

Lukaku joined The Blues last summer for a second time in his career in a deal worth €115 millon from Inter Milan, which made him the most expensive signing in Chelsea’s history and also the seventh most expensive transfer of all time.

Lukaku was brought in to fill the void that Chelsea was desperately missing, a natural goalscorer. Which makes Chelsea’s UEFA Champions League winning campaign even more impressive considering their top goal scorers across all competitions were Tammy Abraham and Timo Werner with 12 goals each. Whereas Lukaku had scored 64 goals in 94 games with Inter Milan from 2019-2021.

Now reunited with the club that first signed him in 2011 and having proved himself as one of the best strikers in the word, it had seemed that this was finally the perfect match. However, that was far from ever manifesting.

So where did it go wrong? After a rough start to his return to Stamford Bridge, Lukaku struggled to find the back of the net and lit up controversy with Chelsea fans by mentioning in an interview Sky Italia that he wasn’t fond with his return to Chelsea and along with Thomas Tuchels tactics and play style. In the same interview, Lukaku also said that he wished to return to Inter in the future. Lukaku was subsequently dropped from the team due to his comments made in the interview and would later issue an apology to Chelsea fans.

Lukaku would continue to struggle with his form in the 21/22 season for Chelsea as he finished the season with 15 goals in 44 games across all competitions. Way off what was highly expected from him at the beginning of the season.
