History
Categora Primera B was active from 1992 through 2012, during which time Alianza Petrolera was a founding member of the league and competed there. Between the years 1998 and 2004, they had a very successful run, with the exception of 2002, when they came in second place. However, following that, they had a change in their luck, and by the year 2009, the club was on the verge of disbanding.
They were terrible in the 2009 Apertura, gaining only five points and not winning a single game. Their performance was embarrassing. Because the club lacked sufficient sponsors, coaches, and players, it appeared as though they would not be able to compete in the Finalizacion. They were able to participate in the competition, however they came in dead last.
At the beginning of 2011, Alianza Petrolera entered into a partnership agreement with Atlético Nacional. As part of this agreement, Alianza Petrolera would receive players and coaching staff on loan from Atlético Nacional, with a significant portion of their salaries being covered by the latter team.
The club had a revitalization as a result of this new setup, and in 2012, they competed and advanced to the finals of the “Torneo Finalización.” Because of this, they were allowed to compete against Deportivo Rionegro in the championship game. Alianza was victorious, winning the first leg 1-0 and the second leg 3-1 to take the overall match.
Because of this, they were able to compete against América de Cali in the championship match of the season, in which promotion was at stake. The first leg of the match was won by Alianza with a score of 2–1, but the second leg was won by América de Cali with a score of 1–0. The match was decided by penalty kicks, in which Alianza Petrolera emerged victorious to achieve promotion to the premier division for the very first time in their history. Since then, Alianza has avoided being demoted to a lower division.
The 2015 Finalización competition was when they had their most successful run in the top division. The club had a consistent performance throughout the first stage of the competition, leading the table for some rounds of the tournament and finishing in sixth place with 33 points. This allowed them to qualify for the knockout stages for the first time, where they faced Independiente Medelln in the quarterfinals and were ultimately eliminated.
