History

The club is one of the oldest in Colombia; it was established in 1927, and it can trace its roots back to the América Football Club, which was established in 1918. The América Football Club is where the club got its start.

Additionally, they are one of the most successful Colombian clubs on both the national and international levels, having won fifteen national titles and advancing to the finals of the Copa Libertadores on four separate occasions (including three straight from 1985 to 1987).

Despite the fact that they have never been victorious in the Copa Libertadores, they have triumphed in two international competitions: the Copa Merconorte in 1999 and the Copa Simón Bolivar in 1975. In 2011, América was demoted to the regional second division, where they remained for the next five seasons of competition. They won the Primera B championship in 2016, which allowed them to return to the top flight of competition.

There are a lot of intense rivalries between América and other teams, the most notable of which being with their in-city competitors Deportivo Cali. The matches that they play against one another are referred to as the “Clásico Vallecaucano.” Other opposing clubs include Atlético Nacional, Millonarios, and Independiente Santa Fe.

During the 20th century, FIFA and the International Federation of Football History and Statistics ranked the club’s football squad as the best in Colombia and as the ninth-best in South America. At one point in time, the International Federation of Football History and Statistics (IFFHS) regarded América de Cali as the second-best club team in the world, behind only the Italian champions Juventus.
