Cerro Largo FC History
Since the club didn’t start playing competitively until 2002, they are one of the youngest teams in Uruguay. They had a very successful debut year, finishing the campaign in ninth position overall in the league rankings. After having their best season ever in the Uruguayan Segunda División in 2007, the club earned promotion to the Primera Division for the first time in their history. They remained in the top flight of Uruguayan soccer competition for the next two years.
In 2011, despite the fact that they had ended in sixth place, they qualified for the promotion playoffs and were ultimately successful in doing so, earning promotion following victories against Atenas and Boston River. During the 2013–2014 campaign, they were demoted to a lower division.
They were unsuccessful in the promotion play-off for the Second Division both in 2016 and 2017. They had been fighting for three years in a row before 2018 when they finally prevailed and were promoted back to the Primera Division after winning the Segunda Division. They will be competing in the Copa Libertadores for the very first time in 2020 after achieving their best-ever finish of third place in the league in 2019.
