Akwa United FC History

Akwa United, also known as Ibom Stars FC in the past, was established in 1996 and has its headquarters in Uyo, the capital city of Akwa Ibom State, which is located in the South-South area of Nigeria. The team’s nickname is “The Promise Keepers.”

After a relatively trouble-free transition from Nitel Vasco Da Gama of Enugu, the club made its debut in the first division of the lower league in the 1997/1998 season. During the 2007/2008 season, the club was awarded promotion to the highest level of competition.

The club formerly known as Ibom stars became Akwa United FC shortly after being promoted to the highest tier of the Nigerian football league. The people of Akwa Ibom treasured the opportunity of being availed of elite league football for the first time since the creation of the oil-rich state. Akwa United adopted blue jerseys as opposed to the previous white jerseys and were endeared to the people of Akwa Ibom because of this opportunity. Akwa United played in the top tier of the Nigeria league.

At the conclusion of the 2011–2012 season, Akwa United was demoted to the lower league. However, the following year, in the 2012–2013 season, the club earned promotion back to the NPFL by virtue of a 3-2 victory over Bridge Boys of Lagos on the final day of play in the lower league. Akwa United played its home games in the spectacular Godswill Akpabio Stadium, which has a capacity of 30,000 spectators, beginning with the 2014/2015 season.

After defeating Lobi Stars of Makurdi by a score of two goals to one at the Teslim Balogun Stadium in Lagos, it picked up the Federation Cup title and also earned its first position on the African continent. This victory gave it its first major national trophy in the same year. Coach Zarachy Baraje made history when he became the first Manager to lead Akwa United to a national title. However, the club has also benefited from the services of a bevy of top-rated Coaches in the country. This has allowed the team to continue to be successful.

They consist of a former international player named Kennedy Boboye, a player from Belgium named Maurice Cooreman, and a player from Brazil named Rafael Everton. The team was captained by Abdu Maikaba, who guided them to their first top-four finish. Maikaba would also up to his performance the next season when he led Akwa United to a second-place finish in a season, the league was interrupted after MatchDay 24 in the 2017/18 season.

Maikaba would also up to his performance the following season when he led Akwa United to a second-place finish. After this, they secured their second victory in the Federations Cup by claiming a 2-1 victory over Nasarawa United at the Agege Stadium. Players of note who have worn the jersey of Akwa United include Nigeria’s record league goals scorer Mfon Udoh, former Super Eagles captain and goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama, and Emem Eduok who would go on to emerge the highest goal scorer with Dolphins junior international Nnamso Edo, Adulafeez Awakan, goalkeeper Olufemi Kayode, and others. The stadium is used as a venue for a wide variety of social, cultural, and religious gatherings in addition to being the home of the Nigerian Super Eagles football team. The ultra-modern, multipurpose sports complex with 30,000 seats was designed using Allianz Arena as the inspiration.
