Independiente History
Although the institution was established on August 4, 1904, the date of Independiente’s official founding was not until January 1, 1905. Prior to this date, the team had already competed in Argentina’s first division.
The club, which had its beginnings in the historic Buenos Aires neighborhood of Monserrat, relocated to Avellaneda in the year 1907. The football squad has won a total of 17 First Division championships (the most recent of which was the Apertura in 2002) and 9 National Cups.
Independiente Football Club has won a total of 20 trophies in international club football events, with 18 of those titles coming from competitions organized by CONMEBOL and other bodies. The accomplishments of Independiente include setting a record of seven victories in the Copa Libertadores and being the only club to win four consecutive finals between the years 1972 and 1975.
The club has won the Copa Interamericana three times, the Supercopa Sudamericana twice, the Recopa Sudamericana once, the Intercontinental Cup twice (1973 and 1984), and the Copa Sudamericana twice, in 2010 and 2017. In addition, the team has won the Intercontinental Cup twice (1973 and 1984). The most recent of its accomplishments was winning the 2018 Suruga Bank Championship. Other international championships won by Independiente include two competitions known as the Rioplatense Copa Aldao. These competitions were jointly organized by the Uruguayan and Argentine Associations.
Stadium
Greater Buenos Aires, Argentina is home to a stadium known as the Estadio Libertadores de América. This stadium can be found in the neighborhood of Avellaneda. The stadium is owned by Club Atlético Independiente, and it is there that the club’s football team plays its home games.
The stadium did not receive its current name until 2005; prior to then, it was simply referred to as Estadio de Independiente or as “La Doble Visera de Cemento” (which translates to “The double cement visor”) due to the fact that there are two roofs that hang over the spectators.
The stadium was constructed in 1928 and had a total of 27,863 seats despite having a capacity of 52,823. La Doble Visera, also known as “The double cement visor,” was the first cement stadium to be constructed in South America.
It was designated to serve as the venue for all international championship matches. Independente served as the neighborhood team. After undergoing renovations, the stadium was ready for business again in October of 2009.
