History
Mitsubishi Chemical SC (1947–2000)
Within the confines of the Kurosaki facility that belonged to Mitsubishi Chemical, the club was established in 1947. Since 1973, the club has been a participant in the Kyushu regional league as a founding member. Kitakyushu was represented in the Japan Soccer League by Yahata Steel F.C. for the majority of the club’s tenure, hence the majority of its time was spent playing in regional and prefectural leagues.
In 1965, Yahata became a charter member of the Japan Super League (JSL), and the club finished in second place in each of its first two seasons playing in the JSL. In 1970, Yahata Steel amalgamated with Fuji Steel to establish what was then known as (New) Nippon Steel, and the club was renamed New Nippon Steel F.C. at that time.
In the end, it was demoted to the Second Division in 1982, demoted again from the Second Division to the Kyushu regional league following the 1990–1991 season, and finally ceased operations in 1999.
New Wave Kitakyushu (2001–2009)
In 2001, the club changed its name to New Wave Kitakyushu F.C., reflecting its mission to serve the local community. After finishing in second place in the Regional League promotion series in 2007, New Wave earned a spot in the Junior Football League (JFL) for the 2008 season. In January of 2008, the club submitted an application for J. League Associate Membership, and on February 19, 2008, the application was approved during a meeting of the J. League board. The club published an announcement on April 1, 2009, stating that they would be taking submissions for a new name and that the process would begin immediately. This was due to the fact that the name “New Wave” could potentially lead to trademark or tradename conflicts. Because of this, the new name needed to be something that had not yet been registered as a trademark.
Giravanz Kitakyushu (2010–)
They made the announcement on October 2, 2009, that the new club name for the 2010 season would be Giravanz Kitakyushu (, Giravantsu Kitakyushu). The name “Giravanz” comes from two Italian words: “Girasole,” which translates to “sunflower,” and “Avanzare,” which means “moving forward.”
According to the official news release, the name was created by combining the two phrases. (The sunflower is considered to be one of the symbol flowers of Kitakyushu.) Kitakyushu clinched a spot in the top four of the JFL for the 2009 season on November 23, 2009, following a victory away against Arte Takasaki by a score of 2–1.
This accomplishment was achieved independently of the outcome of the last week of play in the 2009 JFL. This indicates that they will compete in the J. League Division 2 for the 2010 season; this was decided at a board meeting held on November 30, 2009, and it was verified at that time.
