History

In 1990, the factory employees of Prima Ham (a food firm) in Tsuchiura established the club, which at the time was known as Prima Aseno FC. After finishing in second place in the 1996 Regional League play-off, the club rebranded itself as Prima Ham FC Tsuchiura and earned promotion to the Japan Football League.

It was prior to the beginning of the 1997 season when Prima Ham made the decision to no longer provide financial assistance to the team, and as a result, the club amalgamated with FC Mito, which had been established in 1994, and renamed itself Mito HollyHock.

Mito’s application to play in the first season of J. League Division 2 in 1999 was initially denied because of an unstable financial and fan base. Mito’s application was first rejected. In spite of this, the team was welcomed into the J. League in the year 2000 after achieving a third-place finish in the Japan Football League in 1999 and receiving support.

As of the year 2016, Mito HollyHock fields teams in both ice hockey and women’s football, competing in the Ibaraki prefecture league for the former and the Kanto league division 2 for the latter.
