History
On December 23, 2014, Freddy Juarez was named RSL’s new Head Coach. On March 22, 2015, in Carson, California, the Monarchs made their USL debut and drew 0-0 with the LA Galaxy II. New head coach Mike Petke and assistants Mark Briggs and Jamison Olave replaced Freddy Juarez at the end of the 2016 season when he was promoted to Real Salt Lake’s coaching staff. Greg Petke was named the new head coach of Real Salt Lake after Jeff Cassar was fired on March 29, 2017, and Briggs was named as his successor.
At Rio Tinto Stadium, the Real Monarchs defeated Reno 1868 2–1 on June 19, 2017, breaking the USL record for most consecutive victories. The club’s first trophy was won on October 7, 2017, when they tied Whitecaps FC 2 1–1 to win the USL regular season title. After Mark Briggs was replaced as head coach by Jamison Olave, the 2018 season ended in a first-round playoff elimination. Martin Vasquez was named head coach before of the 2019 season. On July 1st of this year, Vasquez announced his resignation as head coach of the team. Again Jamison Olave was named interim coach. In a 5-0 victory over the Tacoma Defiance on July 13 at Zions Bank Stadium, Douglas Martinez Jr. scored the club’s first-ever hat trick.
On November 9, 2019, the Monarchs defeated the El Paso Locomotive FC FC 2–1 in extra time to win the 2019 Western Conference Championship and proceed to the USL Championship Finals for the first time in the club’s history. At Louisville Slugger Field in Louisville, Kentucky, on November 17, the Real Monarchs defeated the two-time defending USL champions Louisville City FC 3-1 to claim their first USL Championship. New York Red Bulls II’s reserve squad, the Monarchs, is the second MLS reserve team to win the second division title.
Stadium
Zions Bank Stadium, a 5,000-seat soccer-specific stadium in Herriman, will host Real Monarchs home games beginning in 2018. Real Salt Lake’s training facilities and academy are just a short walk away from the stadium. Real Salt Lake’s Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy hosted the Real Monarchs for their first three seasons.
